Treasure Hunting

Not a great deal of running around after interesting things this week - but a single trip to report, in fact - though at least I do have some vaguely decent shots, as you may have gathered from that thumbnail.. :)

So, to a favourite spot 'somewhere around Dartmoor' chasing a reasonably rare butterfly and despite some not exactly favourable weather [I got rained on..!] I managed to not only see at least 5, but even get the odd picture. Then, sitting down for a late lunch to see what flew past, three Cuckoos decided to have a ding-dong all around me. Observe, regardez;

Pearl-bordered Fritillary

Finding them was moderately difficult. Getting a shot was much more interesting. But hey, what else is there to do?

Boom.

Yeah.
:)

Showing the pearl border that gives the name. The 'single big white mark in the middle' is characteristic Pearl vs. Small Pearl. As is the lack of heavy black marks on outer leading edge and the clear 'three big three small' spots on the forewing in the upper shot.

Let's have a few more pictures;

At least they stood out nicely

Orange antennae tips

Violence!

Violets!

Pale one [or Pale one?]

Right, let's have some birdies;

"Laa!"
Song Thrush giving it large

Keeping an eye out

Cuckoo!

Flight shot!

Cuckoo!

Cuckoo!

Cuckoo!

Cuckoo!

And I don't blame it!
Three Cuckoos engaging in very vocal territoriality, with one almost landing next to me at one point.

Usual bush and tree skulkers were feeling more vocal than visible, so let's have;

Bluebells!

Swifts, Swallows, and House Martins overhead, but no non-Buzzard raptors. Keep at it.

Be Seeing You...
