More Ketchup. Pt.1, Gull Porn

Dividing the backlog into three geographical groups, we deal first with the one you already know about [ok, ok, technically you know about andother, too - or if you don't about .2 second's thought will lead to it - but never mind, eh? Something's better than nothing and all that...]

Not chasing yearticks, just wanting to see a bird allegedly showing very well.

Anyways, Beesands when I went there was notably humourless, but did have this joker wannbe,

Next to the Iced Gem

I was on a time deadline, so wasn't able to stop and check around Torcross. Guess where youknowho was?

Time passed. A return visit, this time with a more obliging bird;

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaaaaa

Ahem.

Hohohohohohohohohohoho

Heeheeheeheeheeheeheeheeheeee

Yeah, so...
Laughing Gull
showing well

Yes gratuitous shots but a gratuitous show was put on.
:D

Showing less well were a party of Goldeneye on the Ley...

Male

Females

Also in sight were 5 GCG and at least 63 Gadwall, with 2 GND on the sea off Torcross.

Finally,

A bit scenic

And the second trip was after I'd done a 2hr seawatch at the Nose; nothing like not having a time constraint [you know, other than sunset. ;) ]

A Mere Two Weeks Behind

[And a bit... Ahem.]

Right then, let's see, what the vickers have I been up to this year....???

Not chasing any kind of yearlist for one.

This, naturally enough, drained all of my motivation, so the short answer is 'very little'.

Not nothing, though.

I suppose the traditional beginning at the beginning approach will do as well as any, so let us cast the mind back to well, not really the 1st.

I did get out and about, late in the day and only about the back streets of the nearby Patch area.

Not so bad as might be expected, as that means lots of big houses with big gardens and not a few birds.*
While the weather wasn't ideal, it wasn't awful, and I managed to add the odd species considered tricky in other areas [Black Redstart and Firecrest for two], but an end of the 1st's total of 23 spp. was pretty awful if you're yearlisting which I'm not so it's fine really.

Hmm.

Anyways, the 2nd saw some actual activity.

One of these scoter is
not like the others...

Broadsands in the sunshine, whatever next??

Long-tailed Duck

Brent Goose;
Patch gold!**

GND
threat display

That against the Brent, which landed on the sea close in and then neatly evaded my attempts to photo it again [also avoided being impaled by that GND, perhaps the two not unrelated...]

A Black-necked Grebe was less obliging, being a bit distant and a lot divey and when looking for nice Siberian things at the Marsh, the best I got was

First warbler of
the year!

Nearby...

First bunting of
the year
[Devon privileges]

But then; somewhere else, somewhen else...

First raptor of
the year

Yes, one of those freak things - should have had Buzzard at least before - but I'm not complaining!
Out 'somewhere in Devon' with The Teacher and No.1 Son - who picked that up first - we were very well treated.
:D

Also of note,

Fieldfares

More than 134 in a couple of groups, with about 15 Redwing and nearby a small party of Mistle Thrush. 3 Snipe were flushed by third parties and flew by in various states of annoyance, but no Woodcock, despite staying out far too late and taking a very circuitous route home.. You know, just on the off chance.

Winter birding in even more sunshine, though... Whatever next?

So, a few trips and a few nice [and very nice :) ] birds. I'm trying that sort of thing this year. Not chasing totals, just going to nice places and [hopefully] seeing nice birds. Maybe even getting the odd usable if not wonderful pic [[oh, now he's just being silly...]]

And I will get in more seawatching!

More ketchup to come. Maybe before I get even further behind? [Ho ho ho]

Be Seeing You...

[[* I may be a working class oik, but I live in a nice neighbourhood. I consider it de-gentrification. 😁]]

That Year Review Thing

There are those who believe that it is a Right and Important thing to sum up one's year - preferably divided up into as many categories as possible - at the end of it. Or at least right at the start of the next one [which is better if you ask me, all those reviews which are written before what they're reviewing is even comple- Ahem.]
There are those who believe that that's all fine but they really haven't the hours it takes to do that sort of thing properly, being week be-    Oh no, sorry, weeks behind on the day to day stuff.

Anyways, 2022 had some highlights. Quite a few, and 240 was only one of them.

Go look at my old posts to see.

In particular, you may hit the post titled 'WOOHOOPOE!!!!', as of all the Glories, that was undoubtedly the gloriousest.
:D

Other posts, such as 'Revenge... REVENGE!!' and its followup, my obtaining the only photos of Glonkus maximus on Fernworthy [the only twitchable Genuine Wild Glaucous going last year 😝 ], nailing that Hooded Crow.. Sorry, nailing down that Hooded Crow [ahem], the bestest twitch [Mump's the word], Quests for Whooper, Woody [and Woody] 😇, finches in trees, and finally seeing a Setacous Hebrew Character....

Do I put a photo in here?

Hmmm....

Bliss incarnate

EDIT:
Oh ok, and another one...

The Run In. Pt.4, No Retreat, No Surrender

What do you need? What can you get?

I needed Bittern, but the one shot [involving being a long way from home before sunrise] needed reasonable weather for a shot [and only a shot] at success.

Hmm...

I needed a couple of scarce seabirds, which were possible even in late December, and the weather was.. Well, wind, maybe even rain....??

I also head the usual issues [and yes that was a typo, but very Freudian so left in] and Life getting in the way of birding as it does..

So I was cradling said head when a Leach's Petrel showed for an amazing time [45 seconds or so is a long time for a Nose Leach's. Really] for The Teacher and not jumping up and down cackling next to him..

The head cleared before dark and I legged it over, in sheer futility.

No petrels, but the Goddess smiled and there were dolphins;

Angler, "Well, I'm
not getting anything else today..."

GNDs: "You think you're worried?!?"

Zoomed in [a bit]

"..So you just bite the fish and
leave the hard bits alone, see?"
"Yes, Mum"

[[Note For The Humourless: Dolphins don't nick fish off of lines - unlike certain Grey Seals! - but the pic went there, so I had to follow. Thank you]]

Closer GND,
last effort from the
old camera

But there was one day to go.

New Year's Eve,
New camera arrived.

Not as good a frontal system as the day before, but, well, what can you do?

6.5 hours from Glonk Corner, plus a good check about the slick and Hope Cove on my way out is what.

The Teacher joined me for most of it and The Artefact ::Ominous Chanting:: duly Summoned another storm petrel - this time a Stormy, it seemed - but I couldn't get on it. However, Its power was not exhausted and as I finished a chat [on the phone, he's far saner than us] with The Veteran, I heard "What's this tiny thing on the slick??"

Oh, that'll be a Grey Phalarope....

Showed - agility incarnate as it dodged around assorted gulls - for about 5 minutes before vanishing as we - having legged it down for closer views - searched in rain vain.

This is the best I got;

Left of centre, nearby gulls
are looking at it
[it's head-on and almost impossible...]

Yeah...

There were other birds [now where did I leave that notebook?]

GND 6 [plus 8 S of the Nose and 11 N of it for 25 total]
RTD  3
Fulmar  21
Gannet  257
Kittiwake  198
Auks [mostly Raz] 242
BHG  87
Common Gull  24
The Grey Phalarope was present from 1210-1215
[Teacher's Stormy at 1040]

GNDs in Hope Cove,
from IMD on my
way back

So 2022 ended with nightfall - I kept prowling about in hope of a Hume's or something because why not - and my personal total for Devon of 240.
Not my record, but close to it, and far better than I could have hoped for at year's start. Chasing a yearlist is a daft thing to do, but it does get you out there and lead you to birds and places you'd likely never see otherwise.
I will do it again, but not in 2023!

Anyways, now that's done with, you can probably guess what sort of post is sadly incoming...
[[Don't bother trying to run, I've already locked the doors and electrified the window latches    ;) ]]

But until then, I shall as ever

Be Seeing You...

[[Ah, for Leach's, Wryneck, and Bittern....  Oh well, that's birding]]

HaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHa......

Shamelessly cutting into the proper sequence of posting, but that's never stopped me before.

Thus, on the second attempt, I present a cheery little fellow;

Laughing Gull
3cy

Isn't it nice when birds behave?

More on this - and what else has been happening this year - at some point in the future when I've finished posting about '22....

[Oh dear]

Anyways, it shall occur.
[You may note I give no indication of when...]

Gone Utterly Quackers

There are birds and there are birds.

When yearlisting, you tend to split them into categories. Gimme species are those you don't have to think about; they'll pop up at some point [you know, Blue Tit, Sparrowhawk, Cirl Bunting*], Expected species should do, unless things go wrong, though you may need the right time or place, and Grab 'ems need to be jumped on when they appear [or if...].

Scaup has wandered down that list over the years.

It used to be a gimme 'just goto Slapton in winter and there'll be a few around', but this year in my need for Scaup I found myself twitching to Beesands - for what turned out to be Tufties and a probable Lesser Scaup [whodathunkit??] - and then finally...

Mudbank, north side of Exmouth, and a nice if rather exposed lookout over the lower Exe estuary;

Devout and Humble prayers are
answered by the Goddess of Birding,
"She's over there, you muppet!"

Ok, bit of a spoiler.
:)

A long way around the Exe, but it did at least offer the prospect of having another sift of the duckies et al at Exminster on the way home. You only see GWT or AmWig [Sociable Plover? ;) ] if someone's gone through vast numbers of the regular flavour to find them. And you can't moan about them not if you aren't prepared to put hours in yourself, can you?

Anyways, a frisky SW blasted right into the nice viewpoint [the saner less willing to suffer for their birds view from the road] but that didn't stop me. Made me mutter a bit but it didn't stop me. I had warm clothing and a nice flask of coffee, after all. And I seawatch in winter, this wasn't much different? [Ok, more birds and mostly just trolling about in front of you instead of passing by once, blink for 5 seconds and they're gone]
Ahem.

Anyways, I had a good look about and saw many nice birds, notably a gorgeous male Goldeneye - lit by the sunshine - and a bevy of surprisingly close [lack of anyone else about and me sitting still may have helped, there] waders tootling around on the falling tide.

No Scaup, though.

Brents!

Dunlin

After a good hour of this I'm a bit on the cold side and I've looked everywhere. Oh well, dipped again..

Cue rainbow.

Oh, might as well check riiiiiight over towards Starcross, there is a channel a Scaup could be in,

Right, you see that channel,
right there in the distance..?

She is in that shot, about 2 o'clock from the big yellow buoy. No, you can't see her, not even a blob. 75x needed and a good angle against the sunshine.
Gotcha and other comments.

Exminster... Was slightly flooded. At low tide. Eek.

But.. Birds.

A few Wigeon

Just a couple of Golden Plover

There's always one

An adult female Marsh Harrier kept the birds alert, and there were quite a few, notably a lot of Golden Plover, and more Lapwing than I've seen on there for a long while [though fancier ducks such as Shoveler and Pintail were thinner on the water].

"Alarm!"

Golden Plover
[and photobombing Starling]

Sprawk raid

It's a lovely spot, and good birding, though that Teal up there is the closest I got to a vagrant.! Late lunch and a session of heavy sifting later, I moved to somewhere I didn't have to worry about my car's fording depth to see if anything was feeling showy on the rising tide [and as the Scaup had been reported to move upriver late in the day]

Powderham Bend was its usual exposed [to the elements and would-be time trialists..] self, but there were benefits;

Avocets and Shelduck,
[with a Barwit doing a fair dowitcher impression!]

Bad pic of a lot of Knot

Tiny compared to the Wash, but a fair number for the Exe, a flock of 68 flew in from upriver and plonked down opposite me  :D  Also of interest, a GND was terrorising the poor ickle crabs off the Yacht Club in what was very shallow muddy water for the species [nope, no usable pic, alas].
I didn't see the Scaup again.

It was a good day's birding and I'll definitely be swinging by Mudbank in future when I'm over that way :)

[[* Ok, that's a Devon thing ;) ]]

31 December, 2022

Temporal Issues

Due to Circumstances, you may well be unsurprised to learn that Backward Birding is a teensy tiny bit behind...

This is in at least part due to my busily trying to do as much birding as Life and my head will allow, with actually communicating about said events falling a distant 35th to all that. My now ex-camera [["Wait, what do you mean 'ex-'... You can't possibly me-" "I mean that's it, we're through. You're done. All washed up." "No, no, you can't mean that." "Oh, but I do mean that. You've been nothing but a pain in the everything and for far too long." "But... But.. Where will I go, what will I do?" "Frankly my dear... You're going to gather dust on that shelf."   "Nooooo........."   ]]

Yes. I went there.

No, I'm not the slightest bit sorry.
:p

Ahem.

Anyways, my ex-camera didn't help matters.
I now have a shiny new camera, so woe betide anything that strays into my field of view.
:D

[Sidetracked again [I blame the pills]]

Anyways, I am behind with much posting, so 2022 will wander into 2023. Not the first time, doubt it'll be the last.

You may at some point get a Highlights Post, but anyone who's been reading this thing [and has at least a part of their sanity left, so, er....  Yes, well] will have a fair idea what'd / 'll be in it.

Until then, here's a picture.

Moorhen!

Inner Harbour. First of the year on Patch, too! [Gasp]

Happy New Calendar Year and all that, and I shall
