A Sunny Afternoon

Spent with the Folks and Canis horribilis salivatus, having lunch and an amble by the Bovey.

It wasn't bad at all, with many of these about;

Silver-washed Fritillary

After trying to bask on my Dad's jacket [oh, if the camera had behaved...], she* settled for the ground, so you have a pic.

The only other poser was waaaay up in the usual Bramble, and not in the helpful way, either,

Showing off the washing, a bit

13+ was being very conservative, though not one White Admiral [late in day/year]

Bashful Brimstone

You may wonder about my reclassifying  a certain canid, well, take a look at these two pics,

Purple Brittlegill.
Would have been a lovely
if someone hadn't broken it

And right after

Slobber attack misses

If I hadn't caught the movement out of the corner of my eye and straightened up sharply....

I'll stop going on about him now.

As promised last time;
Here's something really scary!

Yikes!

You approach a nicely-sawn tree trunk to stop for some lunch, only to find it occupied....

That's a Tabanid Horsefly, probably Band-eyed Brown Horsefly [I wasn't getting close enough to be sure]. They're much bigger than the Cleg-flies [your standard Horsefly], with the largest - the well-named Giant Dark Horsefly - being the size of a Hornet [feel like emigrating?]

Fortunately for us, she wasn't hungry.

[Couple of others were, later on, but fought off]

We found a safer seat, which was surrounded by life,

Ant-sized solitary wasp
[on me]

Black-and-yellow Longhorn Beetle
[on Dad]

Golden-haired Longhorn Beetle

Caterpiller/spider shelter
[empty]

Why you shouldn't mow umbellifers!

Blow this one up. Not because it's super sharp or has anything rare, but just to count how many arthropods are in this one shot.

Love the surprise, and no, I didn't see it until I got the pic on the computer!

There were Common and at least one Southern Hawker on the wing, but typically mobile. This is the sharpest shot I was able to get,

Going up, up, up....

Mining bees!

Andrena sp.

Another species

Carder Bee on Burdock

And don't think that one up there [first of the season!] was the only fungus found, oh no, though absolutely every edible one was gone, for some strange reason...

Crab Brittlegill

Greasy Green Brittlegill

Slate Bolete

Grey-spotted Amanita

Here's a nice hoverfly,
Sphaerophoria batava?
[by habitat]

It was all very pleasant [well, horseflies aside...] and a very much-needed end to another week of Working Joy.

The weather was due to shift a bit the next day, and I had plans to hopefully get my count of SSSBs up a bit.

Would Reality agree with me, or was I to be Foiled Again?

Tune in next time; same Backward time, same Backward channel!

Be Seeing You...
